Join AmeriCorps "Together We Prepare"

The AmeriCorps Together We Prepare Program (ATWP) provides vital emergency assistance to victims and communities affected by disaster, and it increases preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disaster strikes. Participants in this program recruit, train, and support individuals who will provide community outreach and education through Red Cross service activities focusing on homeland security.

The AmeriCorps Together We Prepare Program is made up of 60 spirited individuals working in 13 locations throughout Michigan. These members provide services to local Red Cross chapters and make an important impact on the chapters’ communities. Members are serving in Ann Arbor, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Monroe, Midland, Saginaw, Traverse City, Bay City, Battle Creek, Holland, and Petoskey. Since the formation of the program in Michigan in 2005:

  • 80,399 Michigan residents participated in disaster preparedness and safety presentations conducted by ATWP members in schools, churches, camps, and other facilities throughout the community.
  • 4,875 Michigan residents have been trained in life saving skills such as CPR and First Aid by ATWP members.
  • 5,512 new volunteers have been recruited by ATWP members for American Red Cross chapters across Michigan.
  • 1,318 military members and families have been aided by ATWP members across the state of Michigan.
  • 81 members traveled to 22 states to aid in relief efforts for hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and severe winter storms. Members served for three weeks at a time and have assisted over 69,000 people with their emergency needs.
  • ATWP members have responded to 774 local disasters across the state of Michigan, assisting over 5,461 residents with their vital emergency needs.

The impact of this program does not stop with the changes members make in their communities. As members grow themselves and build relationships with one another and the people they serve, the value of this program and the experiences therein are truly evident.
